Being of scientific a disposition I wonder if he rode the exact same distance from the edge of the tarmac each time he went out - did he track what traffic might have been coming the other way while measuring passing distances? After being hit twice while wearing his helmet he chose the more radical response of "hmmm, if only I hadn't been wearing my helmet perhaps I wouldn't have been hit" rather than the more popular "holy crap, good job I had my helmet"
