Eggbeaters are popular for their durability and relative simplicity. Howevever, I couldn't decide which pedals to get but my university cycling club is sponsored by CrankBros so we get them at around 50% off. That's why I went with the CB Candy SL for my MTB and Quattro SL for my road bike but I couldn't be happier with them. My recommendation though is to find people who have the different pedals or go to an LBS to try them out and see what you like.

Recommending shoes can be a big problem because everyone's feet are different. Buying shoes online can be a big problem if you can't try them out. I have tried on different brands of shoes and each one fits differently, for example I wore a 45 size on brand and found that to be similar to a 46 size of another brand.
