Not the question you asked, but I have come to understand that 85%+ of all beeping by cars is simply a precaution on their part (and one that I'm tempted to use while passing cyclists on a narrow road where I can't give the 7-10 ft I like). It's just that they are asking you not to anything silly in the next 5 seconds while they pass. So what if one of us gets offended by the beep. It's really a small price to pay to avoid any problems.
