Generally you must identify yourself if asked. You don't have to provide an actual ID... BUT (There's that word!) if the officer is not satisfied that you've given him a correct ID, then he can hold you until they CAN verify your ID!

As far as whether a ticket affects your driving record... that varies depending on the ticket and the area you're in. Research your local laws!
