I know nothing about bikes but want to get a road bike for commuting and possible day trips.

My friend is selling this PUCH bike that we think was made circa 1980-89. It is brand new out of box and has never been ridden.

This is how he describes the components:

It has Shimano Derailleurs, a Suntour Crank and Pedals, Weimann Brakes and Levers, SR Handlebars, and Everything is original.

It also says Cavalier and has a "100 Years" sticker on the frame.

He listed it for $400 on craigslist but is willing to sell it to me for less.

Is this a smart purchase for my first bike? How much is a reasonable price?

If anyone has thoughts, I would be very grateful.
