If he doesn't have a bike now then a road bike is a good choice. He will need to do some training and tri bikes aren't known for their good handling and comfort. The Soloist would be a good choice. As Jeremy mentioned he can always toss on an aero bar for events and he will be on a bike he is comfortable with.
Right and tell your friend if he would like to see some Cervelo's in action, both road and tri, come to Absolute Endurance, (
