<not a mechanic>I would think that you _should_ be able to get a double working with brifters regardless of pull, as the double brifter gives up plenty of slack (i.e. enough to fall off to the inside of the small ring). Set the high end so that it's in the right place (i,e. so that the high limit screw doesn't do anything), and you should be able to use the low limit screw to hit the right place for the little ring.

EDIT: Also, if it helps, I know that the double brifter for 105 and up has a click's worth of trim adjustment.
