I'm guessing that the maps, and the tours which follow them, are a good source of revenue for the association.

Also, many folks enjoy following a designated route, beyond any sense of security. The TransAm route, in particular, can be considered a rite of passage for North American touring cyclists - much as the Appalachian Trail is to hikers.
