shifting factors

Hey everyone, i've been looking at how the STI style shifters work from the inside out (had some broken ones laying around the shop) i was comparing a sora and an older ultegra(probably circa 2002) I was wondering what all of you thought was the biggest factor in precision shifting. Would you assume the biggest factor is the the deraillur it self, how well the cable is installed as far as tension goes, or would you put the biggest factor on the actual shifter/brake lever? just thought i would ask you all and get some feed back.
