Yeah, steel wool will work well too, just be careful not to scour the metal too much or it will show up under the paint as swirls.

I figured out what I like so much. There's a really nice depth to the original paint. It goes from a deep brown to a nice coppery color. Very nice and something you wouldn't see on a bike today. Not flashy enough.
