My Jim Redcay - What to do? (longish...)
Hi folks!
Newbie here...
Since you people seem to be knowledgeable with those vintage bikes, I'll ask you a couple questions.
First, I am the owner of a Jim Redcay touring bike, which I acquired in 1987. The 2 owners before me had put some good mileage on it. Up until 1991-2, it was my primary means of transportation before I decided that the streets of Montreal are in too bad a shape for this bike and got a MTB. The frame is awesome, even if the paint is getting rough and there are more than a couple of scars from everyday use and many weekend rides. It's got Campy (NR?), Phil Wood hubs on Rigida wheels, TA triple crank and a couple new parts like XT bottom bracket, clip-on pedals and contemporary handlebars.
It has not seen much road though for the past 5 years and I'm thinking what to do with it. Should I keep it or sell? I need both money and space. I was thinking selling it until I got here for more info and reading your posts made feel nostalgic about riding this incredible piece of bike.
My first question is. If I want to ride this bike, I need to be able to carry my 2 and a half year old son in the back seat. That means up to 35-50lbs more than my weight (180) on the back of the frame. Can a 25 year old frame handle it?
Question 2. If I decide to sell it, how much is it worth? On a scale of 10, i'd say the bike is a 6.5-7. It needs some refurbishing. It would be hard to sell it locally as well, since the market here is not that of the USA. Where to sell it then?
Given this bike is still roadworthy and can answer my needs (carrying my kid around), I'll be more than happy to change my plans and sell my Specialized MTB and keep the Redcay instead.
