I have carried my 25 pound hard-tail up those stairs and let me tell you, they are long and steep... the distance between the valley floor and the city proper is 800-1000 feet depending on which side of the river you are on.
I know... my sister lived in Crescent Heights when I first moved to the city, and I had an apartment in Mission. I was often too broke to waste a bus ticket on a short ride, so I'd walk or bike up (and I do mean UP) to see her. Got me into shape pretty damn quick - I am still amazed by the number of hills in this supposedly "Prairie" town!
