- Do you commute by bike, or do you plan to commute by bike this year?
Yes
- How far is your commute?
7 miles each way
- Do you commute every day? All year round?
yes, except for in snowy or icy conditions. The streets are too narrow, and snow and ice removal and treatment is so sporadic, that it's just not safe in those conditions. I've been commuting regularly for about two years now.
- Is your commuting route pleasant? Dangerous? Dreary?
I ride through neighborhoods in my town and in DC. For about half of the trip there's a bike lane, which means the road is very wide and nice. The road is at an angle, though, so there are a lot of roads that intersect and lots of stop lights and stop signs (probably about 25 of each.) The last few miles are on a narrow, heavily-traveled street with cars parked on the side, so I have to be vigilant for cars pulling out or opening doors.
- What bike do you use? If you had to do it over again, would you choose the same bike?
I got my Rivendell Glorius mixte last year specifically for commuting. It's got a nice rack and fenders, good lights, and comfortable albatross bars with bar end shifters. It's like driving a Cadillac, and I love it. Wouldn't change a thing, except maybe disc brakes would be nice in the rain.
- What's the single best piece of advice you could give to new bike commuters?
Be visible--lots of lights, reflective tape, and bright clothing. And have fun!
