Antique Safety Bicycle UPDATE:
I drove to Copake, NY and back today to deliver the old safety bicycle I found at the dump last spring. The bike will be in the April 12 Vintage Bicycle Auction at Copake Auction. A preview of the items for sale can be found here.
http://www.copakeauction.com/gallery...me=2008bicycle I saw some of the bikes which will be auctioned. Probably the most impressive sight was the collection of 25-35 vintage pedal cars. 90% looked brand new.
In cleaning the safety a little before the trip I found a few more clues. Stamped on the outside of the pedal cages were the words "Covington Machines." Also "Covington" was stamped on the rear hub plus another word I couldn't read. Also inside of the rear sprocket was the number "88." I hope that this all points to the bike being made in 1888 in Covington, England, which was the birth place of the modern safety bicycle. If so, I hope this increases the value.
BTW, while on the NY state road heading from I-90 south to Copake, I passed a road named "EAST HILL." The only camara I had was on my cellphone. Even though I took a picture, I don't know how to transfer it to my computer or Photobucket to post. If anyone can help, that would be great (it's a Razr V3m phone). If not, I'll make certain I take a real camara when I go back for the Auction in April.
