I'm a real outdoor enthusiast. I love hiking, hunting, fishing, backpacking, rafting, canoing, cross country skiing, mountain biking and road biking. At various times I've done all of those with a lot of time commitment. I'm not hard core at any of them though, not being a naturally physically superior specimen.
I HATE, repeat HATE with a passion every single magazine I've ever tried to read among those activities.

Outside
Backpacking
Bicycling
Canoing
etc.
etc.

Sometimes there are interesting articles, but they are all oriented towards the idea that we need to compete to go to the coolest place and need to compete to buy the coolest stuff. They are all oriented towards bettering fellow (put your favorite sport here). Whether it's buying a sleek canoe and carbon fiber paddles to beat the weekend rush to a favored lakeside camping spot, or spending multi thousands of dollars to go to the coolest "unknown" or "off the beaten path" destination.

Since the development of usenet recreational groups and, more importantly, forums like this, there is virtually nothing I enjoy about those mags!

Done with rant, going skiing!
