Don't skimp on the gloves. If you do a lot of riding, good gloves are worth their weight in gold.
I also use Louis Garneau gloves (and shorts and jerseys) and I like them. When I first started riding I was using some cheap walmart gloves and they would slip all over the place and were terribly uncomfortable.
Now I would never skimp on any body/bike contact point. Gloves, shorts, shoes and saddle are huge!
