The 1998 2300 is a lugged carbon aluminum bike that has carbon top tube, down tube and seat tube. The fork is aluminum. I never liked the frame but that's just me.

I've helped build up 2 casserol frames lately and they are really nice steel frames. They aren't super light but for a steel frame the weight is actually pretty good. I think that size will be sub 4lbs for the frame.

I'm currently weighing 2 options:

1. Trek 2300 1998 used for $500 (48cm)
Shimano Ultegra with integrated gear shifters, SPD clipless pedals, Mavic CXP21 wheels and got a brake overhaul last year.

I can't tell from the listing if the frame is aluminum or carbon. These are usually carbon w/aluminum forks?

2. Salsa Casserole (45cm but fits like 48cm)
Frame $580
and building up on the economical side with hopes of upgrading throughout the year. In order to make this affordable - 1k or less, I have to sacrifice on the quality of a lot of components - probably go to Sora. However I LOVE THIS FRAME and have heard amazing things about the bike in general.

I'm going to test ride the 2300 the Trek tomorrow. A big hitch w/the Salsa is there aren't any dealers near me (NYC) that stock the bike so I can't test ride.

Any advice?

THANKS!
