Impossible to answer without more information, but if you bought from a decent shop, they should be able to tell you if a longer stem will solve the problem (on the other hand, a decent shop probably should have spotted the problem before you went out the door). I think I'd go back very politely and tell them what's wrong and ask if you can try a new stem. No point in being antagonistic unless they refuse to help.
