Put it this way....without a brake, a lot of pressure is going to be put on those drops. Do they look like they can withstand a lot of pressure? To me and to your mechanic, no, they don't. Ride it but do everyone a favour and run a brake.
Just out of curiosity, what would make the force exerted on the dropouts by a skid different than locking the rear wheel using a hand brake?
