2 things. First keep your eyes open and avoid things that can puncture your tire. Riding in groups sometimes makes this impossible so avoid groups of blind people who don't call out stuff.
Second lots of talc or baby powder in the tire and around the tube help prevent many pinch flats and makes mounting the tire easier.
