I rode a couple winters with a touring bike and somewhat wide tires at 35mm. It was not optimal in my opinion.

Of course, everyone has a different opinion but I believe mountain bikes rule winter conditions. I love mine. It has made winter riding a blast. Big old 2.1 inch wide knobby tires kick some arse.
