yeah like folks have said, that 1000 won't allow for wide tires on it. NOkia makes studded 700's but they are going to be wider.

If your commute is not too long (5 miles or so one way is what I have) I'd find a nice steel frame MTN type bike from the early 90's (Trek 820 etc, cheap), and modify it some for your use. Nokia 160 studds for ice, 1.90 or so semi nubby for the rest of the time. Some PB fenders (they have YELLOW ones that are easy to SEE). I use a 3 speed internal in back. The salt and sand will dissolve a DER system in no time flat. I think I spent more on the Nokias than I did settin up the rest of the bike, and it hasn't failed me once thru THE snowiest winter on record in Madison, WI.

Save your nice roadie for when the weather is nice.
