This is not really true. SA hubs were very much aimed at the racing crowd, and SA sponsored riders broke numerous speed records. For a long time, either an SA hub or a derailleur were equally highly regarded for racing. It's true to say that an AW might not have been the first choice, but neither would the ASC have been - the AM and FM have closer ratios.
