I went to my lbs and they said to fit a 1 - 1/8th stem in a 1" fork I would have to buy and adapter for $27 do I still have to do that if I buy the Soma headset with a shim fit a 1" steerer?

I told them about the 1' steerer and they didn't know what I was talking about.
