Yes, most of us have encountered that response. I live about eight and a half miles from work (one way), and quite often when I get off work I do not go straight home, but go for about a 25 mile ride.
The first distance is hard enough for people to grasp, but when I tell them I ride longer distances for fun--then they think I am crazy
