I think wood is beautiful, and I'd consider making myself a set like the Fast Boy bars for a townie.
I've been building furniture for 6-7 years now. I have a degree in Furniture Design, and I've been employed in woodshops/fabrication for the last 6 years or so.
A degree in Furniture Design is hardly a qualification. I'd defy you to snap a 1" piece of Oak or Hard Maple. Properly machined and installed a wooden bar would proably hold up much better than a carbon one.
