Plenty of reason to need more than one gear choice. I run four different gears on my ss/fgmtb..not all at the same time. On big gear for riding it on roads, and three other lower gears that are each used specifically on different trails, depending on the difficulty level of the trail...the lowest gear on the hilliest gnarliest trail and higher gears on flatter less complex trails. Different circumstances call for different gears...thats one of the challenges of fg/ss, judging the best gear for each ride.
doesnt this defy the whole notion of a
single speed? if you are going to be changing gears, get a derailleur.
