Bikes: Cannondale R500, Motobecane Messenger

I read the article. To sum it up, SRAM's propritary cable pull will shift a Campy's cassette spacing with a Campy derailer, and a SRAM derailer with a Shimano or SRAM cassette. Just an oddity of engineering or done on purpose?
