Even by your prices- $200 is not going to buy a lot of bike. A realistic price for something that is worth buying will be double that.

My LBS does sell bikes for £200. Not something that I would enjoy riding- or maintaining. Heavy frame- very cheap Groupset (?) wheels not worth a light and will need a lot of replacement parts within very short milage.

But I have just looked at the bikes of a bunch of "Non" cyclists that are doing a charity ride this year. These are the £200 bikes and are a couple of years old at least. I said I would check the bikes over and I doubt that any of these bikes have done more than 50 mile. Not one needed new parts- but Brakes completely out of Line to the rims- Wheels needed trueing on every bike and Most needed new cables as the originals were rusted. They just got oiled and wiped clean.

Why have these bikes not done great milage? Bought by the owners trying to get into cycling cheap. They are rubbish- very heavy to ride and do not ride well at all. If I had one of these bikes when I started- it would have done a couple of rides and then been put in the garage or shed- only to be taken out again when someone shames them into doing a charity ride. After the ride- they will go back in the shed.

Only thing is- in comparison to a Wally mart $200 special- these are good bikes.
