Nutrition for moderate to long distance riding.

I could of posted this in long distance or training and nutrition but felt the users of this sub-forum closest compare to me.

I have been riding regularly for almost a year now and had previously planned on about 300 calories per hour. I have read that many people aim for 500 or more. Bare in mind however that I am attempting to lose weight but I can't afford to do myself harm by depriving myself too harshly of food.

How many calories do you plan on taking in when your riding? Do you figure it out on a amount per hour or amount per mile basis? How much extra calorific intake do you build in for rides featuring particularly note worthy hills? When do you injest this extra? 20 minutes before the climb starts? In your breakfast? The night before? How much do you alter your nutrition to account for different intended paces (e.g. recovery rides, casual rides, brisk rides or racing).

I have never previously undertaken a particular "carb loading" exercise the day before a ride for distances below 70 miles. However I hit a particularly steep and extended climb the other day and I was seriously hungry 30 minutes after the climb. Having run out of gels, bars and drink, I was forced to buy coca cola from a pub.
