All I can say is that even out here in Hawai'i, there are $200-250 bikes on sale at our LBS. They exist; the question is whether or not they will be adequately packaged and marketed.
I think most people pass them by for the bikes with the bling written all over them. Cycling is not about riding, it is about ego enhancement for most.
