Bikes: a mountain bike with a cargo box on the back and aero bars on the front. an old well-worn dahon folding bike

Open paved road.

I was just at a manufacturer's website that is selling a bicycle for $4,000. I want to know if there are speed benefits or if they are selling you $4,000 worth of brand name / comfort / looks / reliability.
Fastest bike on open paved road is known as "Varna Diablo II" . Google it.

The closer you get to a bike resembling this bike the faster you will be..... on flat ground.

For riding in mountainous areas, whatever Lance Armstrong rides is probably close to perfect of you want all-out speed.
