Living car free is not working out

Three weeks ago I got hit walking across an intersection with the green light. Only thing that was seriously damaged was my head and shoulder. My head has healed-there was internal bleeding- but my shoulder injury makes it so that I can't carry my bike up and down the stairs safely. I will get rehabilition for that as it turns out. So I have been walking. And almost hit crossing intersections five times now.

That is due to people turning right on red when I am in the crosswalk. Or running the red light. I can't afford a car nor do I want to own one ever again. Nor can I afford to move to where there is less traffic like in the suburbs. The bus does not go to the county parks and the city parks are gang infested. A bus ride to the indoor mall is a hour and !/2 each way and I don't think I can handle that.

Now spring is finally arrived in northern Illinois and I am afraid to go outdoors.

I almost do wish I had a car now though. Living in the inner city has become harder than I thought it would.

Has anyone else had these problems? I was really hoping it would work out.
