Riding with diabetic companion

There are quite a few threads about being diatetic and controling it but I have a question about precautions if any to take for a riding partner.

I was discussing cycling with someone who is interested in doing long rides with me and he mentioned he was diabetic. I want to make sure I understand what can go wrong and what I can do to help in case something bad happens during a ride. I am not diabetic myself and know next to nothing about it. The diabetic is slim and far from being a clyde (not sure what diabetes type this would be).

In particular, I am more concerned about eating and drinking during long rides of about 60 miles or more. When I do it, I could be eating any of the following: fig rolls, chocolate, cookies, sweet drinks including energy drinks, salty nuts. Would it be a bad idea to offer these to the riding partner? If so, what should he eat instead?

I used to go swimming with an elderly family friend and I made sure I knew what pills he took and what circumstances. Luckily we never had any incidents but just knowing made me feel more at ease.

Thanks
