In my world, being doored is pretty much an unknown as I just don't ride on those spaces... this means that at a lot of times I am taking the lane and am well away from doors and the peds that like to step out from between parked cars.
This also works to reduce the possibility of being right hooked or have merging traffic cut you off or hit you as it puts you in a more visible location.
Of course...the cagers are always finding other ways to kill us.
My best "I lived to tell about it" relates to being clipped by a truck mirror when I was taking the lane and was doing 45 kmh in 50 zone... a passing truck cut in to my lane and clipped me with the mirror and because the relative speed betwen us was not high it was more like a hard forward push on my left shoulder.
This sent me right and right into a massive pothole and I ended up doing a high speed nose wheelie through the pothole and out the other side before regaining control.
If I had even breathed on the brake I probably would have went straight over the bars but out of reflex I had already shifted my weight as far back as possible to keep the bike from flipping.
The bike and I were pretty much unscathed although my shoulder was a little sore for a few days.
