Almost called in sick today due to a raging migraine. I waited past the latest time I have ever allowed myself to leave for work, hoping the headache would at least weaken. It didn't. I can't call in sick -- I depend on the bonus of two weeks pay I receive for perfect attendance. I can't drive -- my old van needs brakes. With 40 minutes left to get to work, during the busiest time of the daily commute (7-8 AM) here in the Chicago west burbs, I jumped on the bike. I knew I was going to have to hammer to make the 12 mile commute before my 8 AM start time. A lot of times it's hard to make it on time in a car, much less leaving at the same time on a bicycle.
AMAZING -- after five minutes on the bike my headache turned to a small buzz. Maybe it was the cool air or the exercise -- I don't know. My legs felt strong enough to maintain a faster than normal pace. I hit most of the green lights. My drivetrain held steady (it's past worn out and has been slipping every time I stomp on the pedals).
I clocked in a 8:06 AM. Close enough. I can work an extra 15 minutes and keep my perfect attendance. The headache is better, although I am going to have to buy some Pepto Bismol to help get rid of it.
Best year of bike commuting yet and today is one example. The bike heals, brothers and sisters. Can I get a witness?!!!?
