I honestly do think bike building is kind of a creative outlet thing for some people - sort of an obsession with form, like those people who have 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars invested in old cars that never get driven except onto the floor at shows. The other, "it's not about the bike" type of person doesn't have that same level interest in the mechanics of bike itself and makes more rational, practical decisions because it's more of a tool to them. And those two types of just don't seem to see eye to eye at all.

You forgot the third type. The bitter, low wage rider. These are the people who secretly like the fancy stuff, but get off on making fun of people who can actually afford it.
