Bikes: How'd I get this many?

proper sized lockring wrench?

I have a Park Tool HCW-5 lockring wrench and was trying to use it to take off a Surly lockring. I have used this wrench before to do this job and it has never really fit the lockring well. The diameter of the opening on the wrench is not sized well for the lockring and kind of "kicks out" as I go to turn and torque it.

Am I using the wrong model/size wrench? Even when I was able to tighten/loosen a LR before, I'd have to get the tooth to bite and turn it carefully, as it would kick out if I turned it.

Sorry I can't describe it better. If I simply turn the wrench the back of the opening will hit the LR and kind of pivot the tooth off of the LR notch. This is a new LR and the wrench is a few years old.
