i use park's HCW-5. it's a bottom bracket tool and a lockring tool. the lockring tool suffers from the same problem that you mention - it just kicks off because the radius isn't right. but the three-pronged part is actually really useful. hook one prong into a lockring notch and grab the rest of the lockring with the rest of the wrench - it will grab it nicely.
