SS infers the ability to coast, while fixed gear refers to a fixed drive train. Many entry level bikes include a rear wheel with a flip flop hub, meaning that depending on which side of the hub is in line with the cranks, one could either run SS or FG. Singlespeed and track bikes are not necessarily synonymous, because the track bike label usually denotes a fixed drive train.
