don't get me wrong, i hate SUVs and consumer culture too. i just don't think there's anything to be done about it. people are going to buy useless **** no matter what. i do my best to not buy very many brand new things. i buy shoes about once a year and new chains/cassettes/cogs/tires/tubes for my bikes accordingly. other than that, most of my money goes to pay bills and rent and student loans and food.
