FWIW -- soap test came up negative (it makes it easier to see the small bubbles I think) -- but my new tube seemed much better after my ride today - so sayonara to the old tube. Thanks all for input on an unglamorous subject - I've previously not had much problem with flats, hence my A1 noob question.
