Shecky's photo is from a site entitled "Photos from the Past". Non hooked rims became obsolete in the late '70s, early '80s when hooked bead tires and rims became
widely available and were capable of pressures >100psi. This enabled performance
close enough to tubular tires that tubulars were rapidly superceded in general use
on the road. Tire and tube weights could be close to the lighter tubulars, at least
tubulars safe enough to use more than a few times(>220grams) though the rims
were 150gms or more heavier. It was incredibly easy to blow those unhooked tires
off rims, sounded like a 22cal short going off. Steve
