Here's a good hint for getting freewheels loose when they are really on tight:

Place the freewheel tool in a vise and then put the wheel/freewheel assembly onto the freewheel tool.

Use the leverage of the whole wheel to turn the freewheel off.

This sure beats trying to use a wrench to loosen up a tight freewheel.
