I was planning to do a 7 to 9 speed upgrade on the cheap on my 85' Eddy Merckx. I started looking for a 9 speed rear derailleur and a set of 9 speed double brifters of at least 105 or better quality. I also needed to find a new wheelset. I ended up finding a slightly used Ultegra 9 speed group on the Serotta forums. I planned to use my current Dura Ace f/d, cranks/BB, and 105 dual pivot brakes. But, I found the group that included f/r derailleurs, Italian threaded BB, 175mm cranks w/ 53/39 rings, brakes, brifters, and a braze on front derailleur all Ultegra for $310 shipped. I was at a lost for a wheelset, but I ended up buying a Vuelta road wheelset off of ebay. The only thing I have to buy is a 9 speed chain and that should be in on Thursday.
