If you haven't measured it, you have no idea what the proper pressure should feel like. What you're calling "firm" may well be outrageously soft.
That's exactly what I was going to say. 45psi "feels" firm, but when the tire calls for 60-65 psi, you're way under-inflated and prone to slippage.
