If the dramatic ratio change is what's bothering you, why not shift up two or three in the rear at the same time that you shift down to the 34 in front. I do this consistently on any setup. It keeps the ratio change on par with one click in the back.
My suggestion also. Some complain about the double shift but after you get used to it, it will seem second nature. Take some rides on the flats and get used to the shifting. If you went to a compact for the hills the glitches of a compact crank will be worth it.
