Just make sure to Proofhide the bottom of the saddle, too. If you ride in the rain, I wouldn't worry about it. Your ass is on top, and should keep it reasonably dry, and the Proofhide on the bottom should do the same thing. If you're locking up in the rain, wrap a plastic bag around the saddle.
+1 to this, but I've never proofhided mine and have ridden it in the rain 2 or 3 times, and it is OK still, but I think it had been proofhided before I got it (second hand)
