Don't let it deter you. Although I guess anybody could be a victim, I think you need to ride through that area looking aggressive, and showing with your body language that you don't take ****e. I stare dudes down if they're looking shady, and take an aggressive elbows-out riding posture through that section.

Not sure I'd want to ride through there in the pitch dark, however.
