But in reading old threads I still can't seem to find a definative answer to this question:

When using an 8 speed DA hyperglide cassette and an 8 speed DA derailleur will a 9 speed shifter index correctly? If so, is that any 9 sp shifter or only certain groups or mounting types?

The Sheldon Brown chart here: http://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html seems to have a line that says yes, any shimano 9 speed shifter with a DA 8 speed cassette and derailleur will work (4th line down under shifters). But in searching old posts I have not seen where he unequivocally states or denies this.

Anyone else?
